The Conference was opened by the Hon. Hugh Main, M.L.A., Minister for Agriculture, on Monday, 22nd March, at the School of Arts Hall, Sydney.
After expressing his pleasure at being invited to open the Conference, Mr. Main said that a definite bond linked the Department of Agriculture to the Institute of Inspectors of Stock of New South Wales. He hoped that the Inspectors would continue to enjoy the assistance and advice of the Department's technical officers, so readily tendered in the past.
Mr. Main praised the spirit of co-operation displayed by senior inspectors when "breaking-in" new appointees. The department realised that the lot of the fledgling would have been extremely difficult if it had not been for the kindly and timely assistance of the older inspectors.
In complimenting the Institute on its choice of president—Mr. J. G. Johnston—Mr. Main explained that that official not only knew his job thoroughly as an inspector, but had had the advantage of a wide experience in the western districts.
Mr. H. C. Moulder, M.L.C., Chairman of the Pastoral Protection Board's Council of Advice, supported the remarks of the Minister, and in his address said that he had the authority of the Premier to say that "Mr. Stevens stands right behind us in our request for additional accommodation for veterinary students at the University. While 150 students were enrolled, the accommodation was sufficient for 50."
Mr. Moulder said he thought that the status of Inspectors of Stock had improved in recent years, and their work was now more highly appreciated, principally because they were better understood by the Stock owners.
After a paper had been submitted by the President, Mr. J. G. Johnston, on "Disease Control in N.S.W.," a vote of thanks to the visitors concluded the proceedings in connection with the opening ceremony.
