During the early part of the season many parts of the State experienced fairly good pastoral conditions. Unfortunately, however, a dry period has set in. Many parts of the State are now seriously short of feed.
One very regrettable feature during the Summer months has been the disastrous bush fires which have occurred in many places. It is deplorable to see bush fires occur year after year causing great loss of property and stock, and I believe that the time has arrived when more should be done to prevent these fires. Pastures Protection Boards, if given the necessary authority, are in a good position more adequately to control this menace.
Some of our members have lost sons and other relatives on active service. Our deepest sympathy is extended to these members.
Since the outbreak of war a considerable amount of extra work has been given to Inspectors. This has been done readily by our members. Many Inspectors are Chairmen of District War Agricultural Committees, some are attending to two districts. and doing war work in various other ways.
Inspectors of Stock are always anxious and willing to assist stockowners to keep up production. Stockowners are asked to look on the Inspector as a friendly adviser who can be approached at any time on all matters concerning health of livestock.
During the year the Minister for Agriculture saw fit to amend the P P. Act. The Amended Act provides for several important and desirable alterations. Several anomalies have been cleared up and the amendments are welcomed by Inspectors of Stock and P.P. Boards.
I desire to express appreciation of the harmonious relationship which has existed throughout the year between the members of our Institute and the Departmental Officers. P.P. Boards' Directors and the Council of Advice.
